In Vilnius, there are already ambiguously rated average by drivers speedometers. Although they don't measure speed yet, they will start testing the equipment soon.

Average speed meters will work in both directions on Geležinis Vilkas Street. Meters will also measure the average speed on the Western Ring Road from Pilaitė Avenue to Oslo Street, on Teodoros Narbutos Street from Laisvės Avenue to Sēlių Street. However, one stretch will change location every once in a while.

"There will be one (10 simulated hulls) into which one sector will be moved speed meter. 60 places are planned, to which it will be possible to move the imitation boxes in which the camera will be installed", said Arūnas Visockas, Senior Advisor of the Vilnius Infrastructure Group.

So it is possible that you will fly down the street and not even know that your speed is being measured.

Drivers are not satisfied with the new average speed meters in the city.

However, driving instructors are convinced that such speedometers are even necessary in the city.

"Accidents also happen in the city, and people are injured and killed, so you need to drive according to the rules everywhere, not exclusively on some street," said driving instructor Artūras Pakėnas.

"Driving at the speed limit, we feel the pressure of the entire flow. It has become the norm that all traffic moves at a speed of 10-20 km higher and when driving with students it is very difficult and complicated to convince them not to follow that traffic", said driving instructor Kastytis Povilaitis.

Some say that the sections where the meters are installed have no crossings and accidents often occur. Instructors hope that the selection of locations is not random.

"I sincerely hope that when making such decisions, a cost-benefit analysis is carried out, so that a similar story as in the center of Vilnius with concrete pillars, with green arrows at traffic lights, this is removed and this is put up, does not repeat itself... And we, the taxpayers, pay for all this", - hoped K. Povilaitis.

"Although it is not pleasant, we are citizens, we are responsible, social citizens, so we must obey the law, even if we don't like it very much. Let's take steps, write letters, fight for this, let's elect a suitable mayor who also respects some norms", urged A. Pakėnas.

According to the representative of the municipality, meters are installed in those places for a reason.

"There are complaints, many emergency situations, black spots... Considering the whole situation, we see that stationary speed meters do not solve everything. It was decided to test the sectoral speed meters in the city as well", explained A. Visockas.

It is true that the meters are not working yet, but the testing of the equipment will begin soon.

"I think that the testing work will not take long, it may take up to a couple of months, and then drivers can receive notifications... We plan to start operating at full capacity already in the summer," promised A. Visockas.

The installation of average speed meters with maintenance cost a little more than 400 thousand euros.

So far, the decision has not been taken, but it cannot be ruled out that such average speed meters will increase in the capital in the future.
