An exclusive old town house hides a gruesome history

Centuries-old buildings, the walls of which have heard the secrets and events of the people who lived from generation to generation, still remind us of riddles about the events of different eras.

In Vilnius, in the very center of the capital, on the street named in honor of the Lithuanian philosopher, theologian and poet Adam Dambrauskas-Jakštas, the unique building, marked with number 9, preserves a special history.

The four-story neo-Gothic brick building was designed by the famous Russian architect Mikhail Prozorov. 14th century the architect and his family owned XNUMX rooms in the house built at the end of the XNUMXth century, while the other rooms were rented out to shops, the railwaymen's club and other needs of private individuals.

An ornate hall was set up in the building, where meetings of artists, politicians, scientists and other intellectuals took place. Back in 1905, the play "America in the Bath" was performed there. A few decades later, the director Juozas Kanopka founded the "Flying Vaidila" theater with his students. For some time in the building, between the wars and during the war, an elementary school and the Vytautas Didijos gymnasium operated. However, this cradle of culture and business in the heart of the city was shaken by a tragic event - a plane crash.

Missed flight

According to historian Karolis Kučiauskas, in 1936 On June 8, Polish pilot Włodzimierz Paprzycki and Vilnius cadet Czesław Kiernowicz took off from the Kirtim Airport on the French-made "Potez XV" plane. The latter was assigned to pilot the aircraft. After daylight, the residents of Vilnius, who were near the current A. Jakšto Street, heard a terrible sound - after the engine failed, the plane plunged down and crashed into the roof of the 9th building.

The aircraft broke into pieces, pierced the roof and several floors of the building - the propeller appeared in the teacher's room of the elementary school at the time. Unfortunately, both pilots died in the tragedy.

Artists and businesses were established

At the beginning of the Second World War, the building was badly damaged, but it was rebuilt after it. After Lithuania won its independence, intellectuals began to gather in the 9th house of A. Jakštas again, and artists found a place for their work - performances were organized here by Vytautas Kernagis, director Adolfas Večerskis and others.

Now, in the center of Vilnius, between Gediminas Avenue and the Neris River, a neo-Gothic house houses various businesses and cultural centers. Perhaps the most famous is the one that opened its doors a few years ago steampunk style bar "Variokas" and above it "Vaidila Teatras", which has become a cultural center. Several dozen artists, craftsmen and creative people who provide private services also develop their activities here.

The moving chair - in the middle of the night

Doing business in the legendary building for many years and steampunk Vainius Indreliūnas, who founded the style bar, is not surprised that there is a special atmosphere in a building with such a history.

"Recently, a motion-sensitive video surveillance camera installed in a bar went off in the middle of the night when a bar stool suddenly moved. All visitors and employees had left at that time, and the doors of the premises were locked. Several unrelated customers have told me that they have seen the hazy silhouette of a woman at this location. A shudder was also caused by the memory of the barmaid, when she was left alone to clean up the premises after a day's work, and she heard the sound of the heels of men's shoes," said V. Indreliūnas, who was in the premises, telling mystical stories.

Restless spirits in foreign bars

Not only in Vilnius, which is reminiscent of the Middle Ages, you can find mysterious places surrounded by scary stories and even plays. For example, in Great Britain, you can visit dozens of pubs where centuries-old stories about strange events or even horrific tragedies that once took place in that building are passed down by word of mouth.

The Mermaid Inn Rye, a pub and hotel in Sussex, England, has been around for 1156 years. The hosts themselves believe that their hotel is really being played. It is said that the chair in the Kingsmill room starts bouncing like crazy at night, so the maids do not walk into this room one by one. They have heard the story of how an American woman was woken up in her room at night by a man dressed in ancient clothes. He just sat on the edge of the bed. The terrified woman ran to another room where her son was sleeping. Later, the resident of this ghost hotel did not see her again.

Back in February 2014, security cameras at the Ye Olde Man and Scythe pub in Bolton, which has been open since the XNUMXth century, captured the silhouette of a man believed to be smashing a beer glass. According to the landlords, who found shards of glass on the floor, it could be the ghost of aristocratic former bar owner James Stanley.

Historical facts testify that he was killed during the civil war in 1651, when the man spent his last hours sitting on a bar stool before being beheaded. In addition, the area around Bolton was the scene of massacres during the war, in which hundreds of soldiers and civilians were killed. According to the owners of the bar, there are already more than 25 cases of gambling.

And at the Spaniards Inn in London itself, customers and staff have seen a restless spirit. As legend has it, two Spanish brothers Francesco and Juan Porero visited the bar in 1585 to pour a glass. These two fell in love with one and the same woman in an instant. During the quarrel that broke out, Francesco killed Juana. To this day, his spirit is believed to haunt both the bar and its surroundings.

So, is Jakšto st. Could the spirits of the fallen pilots play a role in the "Variokas" bar at 9? Judge for yourself after watching the video.
