This year, Vilnius residents and guests of the city can go to the skating rink at White bridge or to Vingis Park. After the Second World War, the city's residents could also enjoy skating rinks, and the largest one was located on the site of the current Seimas.
During the Soviet era, residents often installed rinks in the courtyards of apartment buildings. However, the forgotten fact is that there were even three official skating rinks in Vilnius during the winter at that time: in the town hall square, In Vingo Park, and the largest operated in the place of the current Seimas.
At that time, the "Žalgiris" youth stadium was located on the site of the Seimas buildings, where a skating rink was installed. The youth stadium operated until the construction of the Seimas buildings.
"We, the children of Žvėrynas, used to go to the skating rink in the winter, which was on the site of the current Seimas Palace. The winters were real, cold - the rink was flooded, it was illuminated, music was played, skates could be rented", says the Facebook page "Vilnius City Studio".
The Seimas skating rink was open from autumn to spring, and skating on it cost relatively little - 15 kopecks. Residents could bring their own skates or rent them on site. You could skate for free in Vingios Park.
We remind you that this year, for the first time, the city's largest skating rink was built near the White Bridge. More information is available here.
