Vilnius Town Hall

Town Hall Square is in the old town of Vilnius, On the main street. This is one of the oldest squares in the old town of Vilnius.

The triangular Town Hall Square originated in the market square, which was already in the XNUMXth century. Nobles and merchants built palaces near this square, the square served as a place for execution of punishments (in front of the town hall there was a pole where the executioner beat criminals), markets and social life. Clashes between the townspeople and the invading troops took place on the square several times. Two rows of brick shops and small shops used to stretch from the Town Hall, towards the Great Street, in the middle of the market, now they are gone, but the annual fairs that are still held there can perfectly remind the spirit of those times. In those days, the Town Hall Square was much smaller and was located approximately between the current town hall building, the Holy Kazimierz Church and the beginning of Arklių Street (currently, its boundaries are between Aušras Varta, Giijas and Vokiečiai Streets, the following streets end at the Town Hall: Didžioji, Stiklių, M. Antokolskio St., Vokiečių, Muziejus St.).

There is a legend that during the time of Algird, seven Franciscan monks were killed in the Town Hall Square, the other seven were crucified on the Bald Mountain (today called the Three Crosses Mountain).

Now the Town Hall Square is known as a place for cultural events. Every year, the Kaziuk fair is held here, as well as various concerts, and basketball players' meetings are extremely important to the people of Lithuania. in 2002 November 23 the then US President George Bush gave a speech on this square during his visit - this is reminded by a memorial plaque.
