On Wednesday, a large fire broke out in the leased territory of "Lietuvos Geležinkelių" (LTG) in Vilnius fire at the car dump was extinguished on Thursday morning, and firefighters will remain on duty for some time.

As the representative of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department, Donatas Gurevičius, informed BNS, the fire on Panerių Street in the capital was extinguished at 5 o'clock. 32 minutes.

"There are no signs of a source of combustion, there are no sources of smoke, work continues," a PAGD representative told BNS. 

According to him, about 1,3 thousand sq. About 60 officers extinguished the fire that broke out in the area of ​​22.22 on Wednesday evening. was localized. No one was injured in the incident.

The PAGD representative also informed that a part of Panerių street remains closed while officers continue to be on duty at the fire scene.

"The good news is that it was possible to avoid casualties, there were no injured people. In the nearby site, which belongs to ESO, former high-power transformers with oil were also protected, because there would have been a threat", said D. Gurevičius.

The car dump where the fire broke out belongs to the Ruvis company. The main activity of the company is the purchase, processing and export of ferrous and non-ferrous metal scrap.

According to the representative of PAGD, the company also contributed to the liquidation of the fire, it lent two metal lifts, which were used to turn over and separate part of the scrap metal. Another lift was provided by “Lithuanian railways" representatives.

Experts are still determining the possible cause of the fire.

After the fire, the Vilnius municipality issued recommendations to schools in the pollution-affected zone to organize remote education, and it was also recommended not to send children to kindergartens located in this zone. Over 1 education and training institutions of the capital fall into the 2-90 kilometer impact zone.

At the time, the Department of Environmental Protection said pollution from the fire had dropped to "safe levels" on Thursday.

According to the department, Wednesday's air quality tests showed particulate matter concentrations above the norm and ranged from 131-694 µg/m³, while the daily PM10 concentration reached 81 µg/m³, thus exceeding the limit value of 50 µg/m³.

"March 28 1 hour Concentration of KD10 in Savanorių Ave. air quality research at the station was still equal to 297 µg/m³, and in 2-4 h. nighttime particulate matter concentrations have already dropped to safe levels of only 8-40 µg/m³,” the AAD said.

Specialists of the agency also took samples of wastewater and fire extinguishing water.
