The Ministry of Justice will evaluate Vilnius district mayor Robert Duchnevičius' proposal to allow mayors to marry newlyweds, he applied to the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities (LSA).
"The idea shared by the mayor of the Vilnius district regarding the possibility of adding mayors to the list of entities that can perform the marriage registration ceremony is possible. At first glance, it is compatible with the mayor's functions provided for in the Law on Local Self-Government," the ministry said in a comment to BNS this week.
According to her, this decision can only be implemented "by touching all Lithuanian municipalities and all mayors".
"It is important to hear the opinions of more mayors, which is why we decided to contact the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities first of all. If the mayors of Lithuania agree to accept such new duties, the Ministry of Justice will propose possible ways to properly regulate the possibility for mayors to marry couples who wish to do so," the ministry wrote.
The mayor of the Vilnius district proposes to add mayors to the list of entities that can perform the marriage registration ceremony. He appealed to Justice Minister Ewelina Dobrowolska on Thursday to consider this possibility.
In his opinion, a marriage concluded with the participation of the mayor would become "significantly more attractive", especially because the marriage registration ceremony can be organized not only in the premises of the civil registry office, but also in places chosen by the newlyweds in the territory of the Vilnius district.
