The island village of Kodo evolved from a small artisan academy. Today, this village is more than just that taiko drums headquarters of craftsmen, but also a place where artistic innovation flourishes, the annual Earth Festival is born.

Extraordinary training

In winter, when Sado Island is empty, its fishing and rice-growing inhabitants find solace in the old taiko drums in rhythms. The unique landscape of the island is perfect taiko drums for the rigorous training of masters. The daily routine begins with a 6 am run up and down the steep mountain trails and is designed not only to maintain physical fitness, but also to develop mental strength. After the morning run, the students improve their drumming technique. The training is intense and requires excellent physical fitness. They use the whole body - after all, the largest drum o-daiko weighs as much as 400 kilograms!
