In recent days, Vilnius has been visited by unstable cloudy and rainy weather, which angered many people because it is cold and damp outside. However, on Tuesday evening in Vilnius, it was possible to capture an unusual natural phenomenon - a double rainbow.

The rainbow was recorded on Tuesday (April 16), around 16.25:XNUMX p.m., in Šeškinė by Laima Vijeikytė from Vilnius and shared in the "Weather Enthusiasts" Facebook group.

It is rare to see such a phenomenon in the evening and even in spring. Because the conditions for the formation of a rainbow at this time of year are not as favorable as in summer.

A double rainbow is formed when the sun's rays reflect and refract twice through raindrops in the atmosphere. The first or main arc of a rainbow is formed when light rays enter a raindrop, refract (change direction), reflect at the end of the drop, and refract again to exit the drop.

The second or secondary rainbow is formed when light rays are reflected twice inside the drop before exiting it.

The secondary arc of the rainbow is lighter and the colors are arranged in reverse order compared to the main arc - red will be closest to the main arc and violet will be on the outside. Also, the secondary arc of the rainbow is usually less bright because the light it reflects suffers more light loss due to double reflection.
