Lithuanian Railways (LTG) Group NATO also adapted the Vilnius Intermodal Terminal (VIT) for the transportation of military cargo.
As indicated in the LTG group's announcement, the possibility of loading cargo at the Vilnius terminal will allow military cargo transported from Pabradė to be transported faster, more ecologically, and less burden on the road infrastructure.
"An additional location where military cargo can be loaded will ensure that military equipment will be transported safely, reliably and quickly - both during military threats and during peacetime. For this purpose, we are modernizing the infrastructure, gathering the necessary expert knowledge and improving skills", says Vytis Žalimas, head of LTG Group company LTG Infra.
LTG Group companies can transport military equipment on both 1520 mm and European 1435 mm gauge.
Currently Beautiful, Palemone, a new dual-purpose military and civil loading yard and 1435 gauge roads are also being designed. Kaunas is currently the furthest (northern) point of Lithuania connected to the European gauge railway.
After the installation of the dual-purpose military and civil loading yard in Palemon and the expansion of the capacity of the Palemon road located at the approaches to the loading yard, the installation of additional railway tracks and the extension of the existing 1435 mm roads, rolling stock will be able to reach the loading yard on both standard and broad gauge, and carry out the necessary maneuvers of wagon trains, which will contribute to the smooth implementation of loading processes.
Last year, LTG transported more than 100 formations with military equipment of NATO allies.
