Vilnius is extending the duration of the green light, from now on the signals of even 132 intersections will burn longer. Pedestrians are the basis of the capital's transportation pyramid, so improving the intelligent traffic management system ensures smoother movement of pedestrians. Until now, it took 78 seconds to wait for a green light, but now the time is reduced to 34 seconds.

Eglė Marčišauskė, head of "JUDU's" traffic management department, explains in more detail which places in Vilnius city the traffic lights will be updated.

- How many traffic lights will there be, at which people can wait for a shorter time?

- Pedestrians will have to wait shorter at 132 traffic lights, which are intersections and crossings controlled by traffic lights.

- How long did you have to wait until now? Did the people of Vilnius complain about it?

- Yes, there were complaints. Pedestrians also complain that they have to wait a long time, sometimes car drivers too. In reality, this is a balancing act between prioritization and time allocation.

- What was the average wait time?

- The average waiting time was about 78 seconds. We reduced the time to an average of 34 seconds. Time decreased by about 30 percent.

- How long does a green traffic light light on average?

- I cannot say on average, because the intersections are very different and the time allocated for pedestrians is calculated according to the methodology. This is the length of the crossing, the speed of pedestrian movement is 1,2 m per second, and the time is calculated based on this. There are rules for the installation of road traffic lights, in which it is written how much time it must take. If there is a wide island on the street, it can be adjusted only up to the island, when the green signal is on, and then, in the next phase, only cross the other side of the street.

- Why did you make such changes? Will these changes affect Vilnius' public or service transport, which has to rush to the scene?

- The transport rushing to the scene, we are talking about those services that have beacons, they will not really suffer because they have the ability to drive when the red signal is on. As for transport, the waiting time for a green signal for cars can increase by 5-10% in certain directions. But for the other direction, the time may be shorter, because it turns on together with the traffic lights for pedestrians, and it turns out that they turn on earlier and more often. And if we look at the fact that there are 1,6 people in a car on average, then let's understand that most of them go there one at a time. That's why the streets get clogged. Because of that, there is that encouragement from our side, maybe to move on foot, because now about 50 percent. trips are made by car, and only about 16% of trips are made on foot. travel. That's a really, really big difference. This is a change to encourage walking.
