Germany during World War II soldiers took photos of Lithuania from a bird's eye view. Years later, these photos were scanned and landed on a special archival map website, which, its creators say, can be useful even in areas they would not have thought of.

According to Darius Bujoks, representative of the Lithuanian Chief Archivist Service, the project started a few years ago.

"It all started in 2015, when JAV more than 17 thousand were scanned. aerial photographs taken by German military intelligence during World War II. Digital copies were brought to Lithuania and two years later a project was completed, thanks to which it is possible to compare how Lithuania looked in 1944 and how it is now," says D. Bujokas.

You can find the project website in this link.

According to him, this project can be useful for heritage conservationists who can identify old manors, cemeteries, other heritage objects that have disappeared.

"For example, the Paneriai Memorial Museum has already made quite interesting discoveries based on these photos," says the specialist.

Mantas Butrimavičius, the project manager of the project implementation partners, notes that these photos can also be useful for specialists in other fields.

"It was quite an interesting case when an acquaintance who works with meteorological data says that she is very interested to see Klaipėda as it looked in winter 70 years ago. So such photos can be applied even in such areas", says M. Butrimavičius.
