The beginning of Lithuanian meteorology is associated precisely with the capital. The first air temperature measurements began in 1770. Under the leadership of M. Pochobut Vilnius University. At that time, air temperature measurements were not systematic, not only the location, but also thermometers, data processing methods and observation time changed many times. Nevertheless, the air temperature measurement data has remained since 1777.
Unfortunately, during World War I, all meteorological stations in Lithuania were destroyed, and many of the observational data have not survived to this day.
After the war, the Bureau of Meteorology was established Beautiful. Every day he published a meteorological bulletin: in Lithuanian and German. Since 1926 the weather forecast was also announced.
"The first forecast sounded like this: "In 1926 January 3 expected weather in Lithuania: air temperature around 0°, cloudy." This prediction of forecasters has come true" - the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service shares on its Facebook page.
"Climatologist S. Olšauskas worked as the first forecaster and compiled the first forecasts (among other duties, he was also the only forecaster; when he fell ill, his secretary wrote the forecasts)" - it is written.
in 1938 the Institute of Climatology was established, weather forecasting was transferred to the Military Meteorology Service of the Ministry of National Defense. Until World War II, she made forecasts that were broadcast on the radio and printed in newspapers. Weather forecasting became extremely complicated during the war, and everything had to be rebuilt after it.
During the Soviet era, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Board belonged to the hydrometeorological system of the Soviet Union. After Lithuania regained its independence, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Board was transferred to the Department of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Lithuania.
