The application for the Trakai Historical National Park was submitted to UNESCO back in 2005. This year, the modernist architecture of Kaunas was added to the aforementioned UNESCO list, and the question arose, what about Trakai? It turned out that, unfortunately, this Lithuanian object will not be included in UNESCO.
"The Trakai National Park was assessed by ICOMOS experts as an object of national significance, not of international significance, so Lithuania realized that this object would not be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and withdrew its application," commented Miglė Viselgaitė, Head of Communication Programs of the Secretariat of the Lithuanian National UNESCO Commission.

Trakai Historical National Park was established in 1991. in order to preserve the cultural complexes of the historical statehood center of Lithuania and their authentic natural environment. It is a unique place that reflects important events in the history of Lithuania and Eastern Europe. It is a half-natural, half-formed landscape, the territory of which reaches as much as 8,2 thousand square meters. ha, and it is connected by a system of more than 32 lakes (1,4 thousand ha).
Trakai National Park is not only lakes, castles and nature. There are mounds, fortresses, manors, Kupstian and Wallachian villages, and single-yards. Its uniqueness is that all components complement each other and create a composition of indescribable beauty.
This year, Kaunas modernism is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It became the fifth Lithuanian object on the UNESCO list.
