The Directorate of Border Control Points under the Ministry of Transport, implementing the project "Modernization of the Medininku Border Control Point", is starting work on the modernization of the largest road transport border control point in Lithuania-Belarus.

"The development of transportation infrastructure that would create an attractive and safe environment and ensure convenient transportation is one of the most important tasks of Lithuania's transport policy and my tasks. The Medininkai border control point is a very important road transport gate for those crossing the Lithuanian state border. Starting the reconstruction works of this point will allow to double its throughput, and modern technologies will ensure that this border control point meets all the requirements of the European Union's entry and exit system," says Minister of Communications Jaroslav Narkevič.

The contract for the modernization of the Medininkai border control point (PKP) was signed today. Construction works will be carried out by the general contractor UAB "Conresta" together with UAB "Kauno tiltai" and UAB "Euroelektronika". The price of the contract is 24,18 million. Eur. The works are planned to be completed within 30 months.

After the reconstruction, the capacity of Medininkų PKP will increase to 6000 incoming and outgoing vehicles per day, and the throughput of freight transport will double - from 1000 to 2000 vehicles. 4 new buildings will be built on the newly equipped territory - an administrative building, a bus passenger inspection building with a roof, driver registration and detailed inspection buildings. In the widened section between Medininkai PKP and Kamennyj Log PKP, four traffic lanes will be built in both directions, one more, reserve lane, will be used as needed. The point will be upgraded to allow cars to travel in four lanes at a time, with the number of lanes gradually increasing before entering the control area.

During the implementation of the project, it is planned to install automated traffic control, automatic license plate scanning and other systems, special rooms will be equipped and fingerprint and facial biometric scanning equipment will be installed, jobs for both border control officers and customs officers will be doubled. The PKP will be equipped to meet the requirements of the European Union entry and exit system.

Medininkai PKP is planned to be modernized in two stages. In the first stage, the section of the road between Medininkai PKP and Kamennyj Log PKP will be widened, with the installation of 4 traffic lanes in both directions, in the second stage, the entire remaining area of ​​the point with buildings and infrastructure will be modernized.

The first phase of the project is financed in 2014-2020. European neighborhood measures at the funds of the cross-border cooperation program of Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus, implementing the project "Modernization of the Medininku border control point". The total value of the project is 3,35 million. EUR, of which the funds of the European Union funds amount to 2,5 million. Eur. The second stage is financed by the state budget.

The reconstruction of Medininkai PKP will take place at the operating point. If the throughput of this point is reduced due to certain works, the total daily throughput of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border points will not decrease - additional infrastructure at the border control points of Tverečius, Lavoriškii and Šalčininkai will ensure conditions for normal traffic flow.
