The city's new railway crossing-tunnel project, dreamed up by Lentvaris residents, is at the starting line.
The Lithuanian Motorway Directorate (LAKD) has announced the purchase of works for the reconstruction of the Lentvaris railway crossing and the construction of the tunnel. Documents are accepted until June 17. After that, the contract will be signed and work will begin. The deadline for the construction of the tunnel and other works is 22 months. The value of the project is almost 24 million. euros.
"The Municipality of Trakai district has been persistently striving for the construction of a modern Lentvaris railway crossing for several years. The existing one is unsafe, with huge traffic jams as the crossing is constantly closed due to heavy train traffic. It is not uncommon to spend half an hour or even longer in such traffic jams. Not only cars stop, but also the life of the district's companies and institutions. Therefore, we see the only way out - the construction of a new crossing. Before our expectations came close to reality, we had to go through a rather long and complicated path of negotiations, agreements, design documents, and funding searches with several institutions. We are glad that we have finally reached the finish line of the implementation of this project", asserted the mayor of the district municipality, Edita Rudelienė.
The crossing project will be implemented according to the agreement of the Trakai District Municipality, the Lithuanian Automobile Directorate and AB "Lithuanian railways"joint activity agreement, which was concluded in 2017. By that time, a study of the possibilities of the new crossing was prepared, which includes project proposals for the construction of the crossing, procedures for taking land for public needs.
The Lentvaris crossing will be formed underground - by building a tunnel, because the construction of a viaduct would be much more expensive and technically too complicated. At the end of 2015, the Lentvaris railway crossing reconstruction project was included in the list of state projects and in the integrated territorial development program of the Vilnius region.
