Vilnius city municipality plans to deregister approximately 90 backlog names of rural areas.

As a result, a survey of residents is organized, they are invited to express their opinion on the cancellation of names in the Address Register.

As announced by the municipality, residents of Verkii, Antakalnis, Naujosios Vilnias, Rasi, Naujininkai, Paneri, Grigiškii, Fabijoniškii, Justiniškii, Pašilaičių, Pilaitė wards can take part in the survey.

Among those planned to be deregistered are the names of the villages of Kryžiokai, Salote, Pilaitė, Buivydiškii, Juodojo kelos, Pašilaičių, Rokantiškii, Tarande, Mažiųi Gulbini and other villages.

According to Vilnius city municipalities communications representative Eglės Vankevičės, these areas were connected to the territory of the city of Vilnius in 1995-1996. However, in the internal databases of the Address Register of the Register Center, they remained as rural residential areas with their own names, because they were not canceled and deregistered in accordance with the law.

The exceptional situation is only due to the rural areas of Salai and Neravai belonging to the Grigiškii parish. During the survey, residents can express their opinion to which - Grigiškiu city or Vilnius city - the territories of the residential areas of the villages of Salai and Neravai should be assigned.

"These areas cannot be called rural for a long time, because they have been intensively developed over the past twenty years (...) This will not change the maintenance of streets or territories, nor the social, educational or other services received by residents. Therefore, it can be said that it is a formality", E. Vankeviče said to BNS.

Residents can express their opinion until February 29.

The collected survey data will be evaluated when submitting a draft decision to the council, and later to the Government.

Kamilė Šeraitė-Gogelienė, Chairperson of the Historical Commission of the Vilnius City Municipality, told BNS that the residents' suggestions regarding the interpretation of the names of old rural areas that have been abolished will be taken into account in other ways.

"If any new streets appear around those areas, we will definitely take into account the rural, historical names, they can be reflected in the names of those streets (...) And squares can appear, probably also squares, if there are in those areas, the old names can definitely be reflected in various public spaces ", said K. Šeraitė-Gogelienė.
