Before selling a car, sellers often try to clean not only the outside and inside of the car, but also wash the engine. However, it is forbidden to do this in car washes, the operator of the car wash should be informed about this. Car engine cleanliness should be taken care of in designated areas.

As the weather warms up, more and more drivers are found in car washes who not only wash car bodies, but also engines.

This is usually done by machine resellers.

According to Laima Grižaitė, head of the Communication Department of the Department of Promotion of Communication and Environmentally Safe Behavior, engine washing pollutes the environment because the substances washed off the engine are harmful.

"If not water or surface-active substances are used for washing engines or parts, but other substances - solvents or preparations containing solvents, the liquids formed during washing cannot enter the sewage networks and must be handled as hazardous waste," said L. Grižaitė.

The industrial wastewater treatment facilities of ordinary car washes are not adapted to purify the chemicals contained in the solvents, so such liquids enter the natural environment without treatment. To avoid this, engines must be washed in specially designed areas.

"If you intend to wash the car engine, you must contact specialized car washes. The premises must be equipped with a collection system for liquids that have leaked onto the floor, which cannot be connected to any sewage network. Normally, such services are not provided in self-service laundromats," said the head of the department.

If you notice that a person is washing a car engine in a self-service car wash, you should first contact the car wash operator, who should stop the car wash and inform the Department of Environmental Protection about the incident.

Environmental pollution with dangerous chemical substances is subject to administrative liability and a fine from 60 to 120 euros, in the event of a repeated offense, the fine will increase from 550 to 1,2 thousand. euros.
