Former Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas died after suffering a stroke, the portal lrytas.lt reported on Thursday.
It is reported that this was confirmed to the portal by several unrelated sources from the close environment of the long-time MP.
On Wednesday, former Prime Minister G. Kirkilas was laid to rest in Antakalnis cemetery.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the president went to say goodbye to the long-time politician Gitanas Nauseda, the prime minister Ingrida Simonyte, Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, outgoing president Valdas Adamkus and other heads of state. G. Kirkil's relatives, comrades, signatories of the Act of Independence accompanied him on his last trip.
The unexpected death of G. Kirkil was announced on Saturday morning. He was in his 73rd year.
G. Kirkilas headed the government in 2006-2008. Before that, he held the position of Minister of National Defense and was elected to the Seimas from 1992 to 2020.
In 2003, the politician was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great, and a year later - the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Vytis Cross.
