Do you feel the aroma of powdered sugar and warm delicacies lingering in the air? From February 1-14, these sweet smells will tickle the noses of all Vilnius residents. The first Donut Festival is being held in the Stiklo quarter of the capital's old town.

600 years ago, the Vilnius Glass Quarter was nicknamed the Latin Quarter because of the craftsmen and merchants from Western and Southern Europe who settled there. More than 500 years ago, the first guild of goldsmiths was established there. The Grand Duke's mint stood nearby, so goldsmiths, one of the wealthiest craftsmen, built houses in the quarter. Finally, 450 years ago, glass began to be produced and sold here. Due to the traditions of glass products and trade, the quarter acquired its current name of Glass. Today, this quarter holds a variety of stories from different centuries, traditions and cultural heritage that cannot be found anywhere else.

The community of Stiklos kvartal, which lacks creative ideas, for the first time decided to celebrate the end of winter in a non-traditional way by organizing a feast of hearty food, which will also coincide with Mardi Gras.

"Since ancient times, it has been believed that if you eat fat and full during Mardi Gras, you will be strong for the whole year. After Mardi Gras, Ash Day begins - the beginning of Lent, when believers abstain from overeating until Easter Sunday. While we still have two weeks left, I invite you to taste and keep the old food traditions of different nations, and in this way drive winter out of the courtyards of the old town of Vilnius. At the festival, we will choose the tastiest pancakes and donuts together," says Julija Janus, the author of the idea of the Glass Quarter and landscape designer.

Although the traditional dish of Halloween in Lithuania is pancakes, the organizers of the festival decided to diversify the menu of delicacies by including the traditional dishes of Halloween in other countries. - donuts and brownies. And the delicacies themselves will be of the most unexpected flavors: churros, pancakes with caviar, shrimp, cottage cheese, bagels with venison, donuts stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms. And where are the Italian Mardi Gras donutsdonuts with vanilla cream, hazelnut cream or homemade cherry jam. French crepe suzette, Belgian waffles with ice cream, traditional American donuts donut rolls. Everyone will be invited to enjoy fluffy cottage cheese donuts with blueberry jam, drizzled with salted caramel sauce, toasted almonds and fresh berries. Homemade yeast pancakes, traditional donuts filled with whipped cream will be steaming on the tables.

The symbol of this festival will be Danish Mardi Gras buns fastelavnsbolle, decorated with marzipan and filled with sweet whipped cream. In Scandinavian countries, this bun is traditionally eaten until Ash Wednesday, which is why it is also called the "fat Tuesday bun". Locations participating in the Donut Festival will be marked with a poster with a photo of this donut.
