The organizer of the International Vilnius Carillon Festival and numerous special carillon concerts, artist Jurgis Pauliukas initiated the "City Clock" project, which he implemented together with the famous Japanese carillon player Toru Takao. St. From this April, the carillon installed in the belfry of the Church of the Apostles Philip and Jacob, located near the capital's Lukiški Square, announces the hours with musical melodies.

According to Jurgis Pauliuks, who conceived the project, until now the Vilnius carillon, which is located right next to Lukiškiau Square in the Dominican monastery St. In the Church of the Apostles Philip and James, various melodies were played at certain hours.

However, I've been nurturing the idea of making each hour's beats sound like an authentic piece for a few years now. And not necessarily rhythmic, because life is not like that. However, I imagined that they would be connected by a common (day) thread", shares J. Pauliukas.

Jurgis's idea attracted the interest of Japanese carillon player Toru Takao, who performs in many countries and, by the way, is a frequent guest in Lithuania: "The project is unique, I have never heard of it in the world. Therefore, I took it with pleasure."

J. Pauliukas says that the composer implemented all his ideas.

"He immediately grasped the idea of not having the melody play at the strike of the hour, but announcing it as it struck the hour." In addition, it would be authentic and respond to the rhythm of the day. And also - in one way, the melody would be heard when standing near the carillon tower (more small bells ringing), in another way - if you were further away from it. However, this is what creates the image of the city!" - convinced J. Pauliukas.

The artist says that every hour (from 9 a.m. to 21 p.m.) a melody close to the people of Vilnius, his thoughts, rhythm of life and small details of everyday life is played. It is best to listen to St. in the church yard of the Apostles Philip and Jacob or at the approaches to Lukiški Square.
