JAV tech company Meta announced Monday that starting next month, Facebook and Instagram users in Europe will be able to buy an ad-free subscription to the social networks.

The company said European users will be able to subscribe to the service for €9,99 per month online or €12,99 on iOS and Android.

Subscriptions will begin rolling out in November as Meta seeks to comply with what it says are evolving European regulatory rules.

"To comply with changing European regulations, we are introducing a new subscription option in the EU, EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland," the statement said.

The decision was made by Meta after a series of tougher European Union regulations came into effect, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The EU rules threaten Meta's large ad revenue as they aim to prevent the use of user data without consent.

Meta said social media users will continue to have free access to ad-supported platforms, but personal information of those who purchase the service "will not be used for advertising."

Only persons 18 years of age and older will be able to purchase a subscription.

Meta believes the move will ease EU regulators' concerns about the company's data collection and targeted advertising.

"The ability for people to purchase an ad-free subscription aligns with European regulatory requirements, gives users choice and allows Meta to continue to provide services to all residents of the EU, EEA and Switzerland," the statement said.

The US tech company also pointed to the Digital Markets Act, which will take full effect next year.

Tech giants such as Meta already have to comply with stricter rules under the Digital Services Act, which calls for tighter controls on online content.

"We respect the spirit and intent of these evolving European regulations and are committed to complying with them," Meta said.
