With ChatGPT ending its establishment as a synonym for generative artificial intelligence (AI), Google has unexpectedly returned to the advanced assistant race with renewed vigor.

In February, the search giant changed the name of its tool from Bard to Gemini and integrated it even deeper into its services. Telia's experts reveal what innovations are hidden behind the changed identity of the AI assistant and how it will be superior to its competitors.

The company's approach to Gemini shows that it is not just one of its dozens of products. More than 300 million users are already using the AI assistant every month, and this number is expected to increase by 2024. it is expected to increase to one billion by the end.

Google's CEO has repeatedly hinted that AI bots are the future of online search and will eventually replace the popular Google search bar.

"It's clear that Google got into the AI 'pool' with the wrong foot." Bard already caused factual errors in the answers to elementary questions during the presentation and sent the value of the company's shares down $100 billion almost instantly.

After unsuccessfully trying to shake off the label of a second-rate AI assistant throughout the last year, Google decided to draw a thick line and fundamentally update its robot.

The newly reborn Gemini will replace the Google Assistant voice assistant on Android smartphones and help you write Gmail emails and prepare documents in Google Docs, says Diana Gold, Head of Digitalization and Analytics at Telia.

Google DI = Gemini

Until a few months ago, the names of Google's AI products resembled a bit of a hodgepodge.

ChatGPT's direct competitor was christened Bard when its business version was called Duet AI, and the large language model (LLM) that powers both tools was known as PaLM 2.

In order to more clearly communicate to the users that AI is working in the aforementioned services, it was necessary for the company to "put" all of them under the umbrella of a common name.

This process started back in December of last year, when PaLM 2 replaced three Gemini LLMs with different capabilities: Gemini Nano, designed to perform various smart device functions more efficiently, Gemini Pro for AI assistants, and Gemini Ultra, balanced for the most demanding tasks. ".

A couple of weeks ago, the renaming operation was extended, renaming Bard and Duet to Gemini and Gemini for Workplace, respectively.

The Google Assistant virtual assistant, which has helped millions of users every day for eight years, has not escaped change. It was replaced by a separate Gemini app on Android smartphones, and by the Gemini section of the Google application on the iOS platform.

"Along with the new look comes a new subscription model to compete directly with ChatGPT Plus." After choosing 20 JAV $100 per month Google One AI Advanced plan, users will get the Gemini AI Assistant powered by the more powerful Gemini Ultra engine and its integration with other Google services such as Gmail, Docs, Slides and Meet.

True, unlike in the case of ChatGPT Plus, the search giant will provide subscribers with an additional two terabytes of memory in its cloud storage for the same price," D. Gold elaborates on the difference.

AI connected to Google services

The short answer to the question of what Gemini can do would be "A lot." Like ChatGPT, it can process and generate a wide variety of data types, including text, lines of computer code, audio, images, and even video. However, Google cites integration with other products it develops as Gemini's main advantage over its competitors.

The free version of Gemini can answer simple questions like "How many calories are in a handful of almonds" and generate a short summary of a dozen-minute-long YouTube video in seconds.

At that time, if you ask for recommendations of places of interest in a certain country or city, the Google AI assistant will not only list them bluntly, but will also mark them in Google Maps, where you can conveniently save them for the upcoming trip," the interviewer emphasizes the uniqueness of the assistant.

The company promises even greater capabilities of its universal robot for those who purchase a paid AI Advanced subscription.

Even more precise, Gemini Ultra LLM-based Gemini should appear in Gmail, where it will be possible to find inspiration when writing an invitation to a business partner for lunch, get help with managing the family budget through Sheets, or instruct Gemini to compile an upcoming trip without leaving the service window. plan in Docs.

The rich basket of integrations will also be complemented by linking Gemini to Slides, where it will be able to embellish the design of slides or create an entire presentation based on a given topic or resources.

Good news for Lithuanians

Despite the "new clothes", Google's AI assistant once again could not do without curiosities. A few days ago, an official letter from Google reached the media, in which the company announced that it was temporarily suspending the image generation function of Gemini and promised to improve it substantially.

Such a drastic reaction of the search giant was prompted by the complaints of a significant number of users and even the eccentric Elon Musk himself that the creative assistant responds to queries not only wrongly, but also obscenely.

For example, when asked to show photos of non-white people, he depicted Nazi German soldiers and otherwise defied norms of racial and gender equality.

"Incidents like this certainly prevent Google from taking a more serious stance against ChatGPT, but they don't detract from Gemini's other strengths." One of them is support for even 40 languages.

The DI assistant speaks not only English, Spanish, Ukrainian, but also Lithuanian. This allows those who do not have good knowledge of foreign languages to test the capabilities of artificial intelligence or simply have very capable help at hand, communicating virtually with people of other nationalities," said the representative of Telia.

It is true that for now only the free version of Gemini is available to Lithuanians. Gemini Ultra is currently only available in English and only for US residents, so the AI Advanced subscription is not currently available in our country. You can try Gemini now at gemini.google.com/app
