From 2024 January 1 In Vilnius, the waste sorting procedure has changed - residents must sort not only plastic, paper, metal or glass packaging and secondary raw materials, but also food waste.
In order to make the transition to the new order as simple as possible, Vilnius residents can pick up means for sorting food - single-use orange bags and special reusable containers - free of charge. They are distributed to city residents in Vilnius. in the municipality, the capital's wards, Vilnius' large waste collection sites and shopping centers.
After appearing Vilnius city municipalities calls for collection of means for sorting food waste, queues stretched out in some supermarkets. The municipality is happy with the activity of the residents of Vilnius and assures that it strives to ensure that it is convenient for the citizens to pick up the orange bags and buckets for sorting food.
According to the procedure that came into force at the beginning of this year, residents of the capital are invited to store food waste in orange disposable bags, which must be thrown into mixed municipal waste containers after being tied tightly. This waste is separated from others and turned into compost in the Vilnius MBA (mechanical biological treatment facilities), and the bags are recycled.
