On March 17th, in Vilnius district Construction of a tunnel and other related infrastructure will begin at Taranda and Bukiškis. This project aims to increase transport capacity and connectivity Vilnius district and in settlements located at the junction of the city, which have grown rapidly in recent years. The project client is AB "Via Lietuva", and the contractor is UAB "YIT Lithuania".
According to Vytautas Vansavičius, Director of Vilnius District Municipality Administration, this is a project of extremely great importance that will ensure smoother communication.
"Vilnius District Municipality is pleased to be able to contribute to this important project, which will improve connectivity and quality of life not only for our residents, but also for residents of neighboring municipalities.
"At a meeting held on Tuesday with the contractor's representatives, we agreed that the contractor will be able to use the land plot located in Bukiškis village, Avižienių sen., between Baltijos keli and Draugystės street during the construction period and store machinery, building materials and other tools necessary for the work," said V. Vansavičius.
Solutions have also been agreed with the contractor that will help reduce the impact of construction work on the environment and residents and help ensure the smooth implementation of the project, for example, a special access road to the main road will be installed for heavy machinery, thus protecting local roads from damage.
During the project, a tunnel will be built under the A2 Vilnius-Panevėžys highway in the direction of Ukmergė, approximately 300 meters from the gas station, allowing for bypassing the intersection with Nesvyžiaus Street. A traffic junction will also be installed and the A2 highway will be reconstructed, including an additional lane (overpass) in the tunnel being built. In addition, it is planned to install a new pedestrian and bicycle path from Nesvyžiaus Street to the existing tunnel. Meanwhile, Vilnius District Municipality will begin the reconstruction of Nesvyžiaus Street in 2025 - the project includes the installation of asphalt concrete pavement, sidewalks, street lighting and surface rainwater collection networks.
These works will ensure smoother traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve traffic safety. The works will be carried out in phases and the project is scheduled to be completed in early May 2026.
