In December of last year, we wrote about not only improving, but also speeding up communication with the capital of neighboring Poland - Warsaw. We have just informed about the opening of a new highway section from Suwalki to the Lithuanian border.
It is obvious that the opening of the latter section of the highway speeded up the journey not only to Warsaw, but also when traveling back home - to Lithuania. On August 17, even more good news from Poland - after delays, the section of the highway at Elke was finally opened.
The highway section at Elke was supposed to be opened in May
The General Directorate of Polish National Roads and Highways informed last year that another, much longer section at Elke was to be opened in May of this year. However, the opening of this section was delayed several times.
Finally, on August 17, the Polish side updated the information indicating the opening of this section to traffic. Search systems already recommend traveling through Kaunas, although the construction of a new highway to the Lithuanian/Polish border is underway outside Marijampolė.
According to the Google maps system, if you were to go to Warsaw by car during off-peak hours, then your journey to the Polish capital should take 5 hours and 20-35 minutes, if you did not stop anywhere.
The highway will be completed in 2025
The entire trunk road to Warsaw should be completed by May 2025, and the reconstruction works are mostly stuck on the Lomza bypass. You can see the entire progress of the works on the territory of Poland in this interactive on the map.
It is true that the Directorate General of National Roads and Highways of Poland has informed that they will try and work towards the completion of the highway as early as 2024.
