The project of renovation and development of recreation facilities is being expanded, providing Vilnius public transport more comfortable and modern spaces for drivers to relax between trips. Currently, one of 10 new types of rest rooms is already open to drivers. Vilnius city municipalities The value of the project financed by the funds reaches more than 654 thousand euros excluding VAT.
A total of 10 new rest areas will be installed in the capital this year, replacing previously built container-type cabins. The latter will be moved to terminal stations where such rest areas did not exist until now. This will not only update the infrastructure, but also expand the network of rest areas for drivers, providing them with more comfortable spaces to rest during breaks.
“The work of public transport drivers requires constant concentration and alertness. Therefore, high-quality rest for drivers is a necessary condition for work, as it directly contributes to the efficiency and quality of their work,” says Ignas Degutis, General Director of Vilnius Public Transport. “The expansion and renovation of rest facilities is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the working conditions of drivers. The initiative includes not only the expansion of rest areas, but also raising wages and modernizing the working environment.”
"Decent working and rest conditions for drivers are one of the priority areas of the trade union. Together with the company, we are constantly looking for solutions that would ensure suitable conditions for drivers to rest during work. Modern and comfortable rest houses at the terminals will provide an opportunity to warm up food, drink hot tea and regain strength before leaving for the line without additional worries," says Algirdas Markevičius, chairman of the Vilnius Public Transport trade union.
The first new type of rest house at the Skersinė terminal has already been installed and is being used by public transport drivers. In the near future, five more modern rest houses for drivers will be ready at the Children's Hospital, Lionginas Baliukevičius Dzūkas (former Liudo Giros St.) and Mandarinas, Bitėnai and Dariaus ir Girėnas terminal.
The new recreation areas are equipped with indoor sanitary facilities with water supply and sewage, as well as necessary equipment for relaxation and eating - a microwave oven, refrigerator, coffee machine and other amenities.
The first renovated rest house in Vilnius was built in 2021 in Skalvių žīte. Since then, 10 container-type houses have been installed and 5 rest areas have been renovated in VVT buildings located at the terminal stations of the routes. Last year, 16 additional heated outdoor sanitary units were installed at smaller terminal stations, and in order to ensure better hygiene conditions, their cleaning was increased.
