Thermo Fisher Scientific Expands Manufacturing Capacity in Lithuania

Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, is expanding its presence in Lithuania by increasing its manufacturing capabilities of products for the life sciences market. The investment will enable increased production for a growing industry and create an additional 140 new jobs at the company’s site in Vilnius.

Thermo Fisher’s Vilnius site (Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics, UAB), which has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence for Biosciences manufacturing and R&D,  produces world-class molecular, protein, and cellular biology products critical for research and diagnostics applications. It also houses a research and development center that is focused on the next generation of new products for the life sciences industry. These products are used worldwide to study gene structure and expression, and for development of novel diagnostics methods for innate, hereditary, and infectious diseases.

“The success Thermo Fisher has experienced in Lithuania is a direct result of the region’s rich talent,” said Algimantas Markauskas, managing director, Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics. “The level of qualified candidates available to us has also influenced our decision to expand our Vilnius site event further so we can continue to serve our customers even better”.

Rimantas Sinkevičius, Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation, said the company’s expansion is a major step toward achieving a critical milestone in Lithuania.

“In 2018, the Lithuanian government laid out an ambitious strategy whose goal was to have life sciences yield 5 percent of our GDP in 2030. This expansion shows that we have both the expertise and the infrastructure needed to achieve this goal. Thermo Fisher’s decision to expand their already significant presence in Lithuania marks a major validation for our growing life sciences sector, and we hope to see many more prominent organizations following suit in the coming years.”

Mantas Katinas, General Manager of Invest Lithuania, underscored the significance of the country’s talent to attract further investment: “We are proud that Thermo Fisher has made this decision. We have the depth and breadth of talent that is needed to allow major international players to not only establish Centers of Excellence, but also to expand them.”

Thermo Fisher Scientific is the world leader in serving science, with revenues of $25 billion per year and 75,000 employees. Thermo Fisher Scientific estabished its presence in Lithuania in 2010, when the company acquired a leading Lithuanian biotech company Fermentas.
